Essentially, cataracts were really rough, rapids-like places along the Nile River that protected Egypt from attack from the South. There are 2 cataracts (if I remember correctly), and they are really difficult to navigate, full of rocks, rapids & things no ship technology of that era could navigate safely. Hope this helps!
